How Dutch ring sizes work
In the Netherlands, and in Flemish Belgium, a ring size (ringmaat) is normally the ring's inner diameter in millimetres. A ringmaat 17 ring measures 17 mm straight across the inside. Dutch jewellers sell sizes in quarter-millimetre steps, so you will see sizes such as 16¾, 17 and 17¼.
Some international brands selling in the Netherlands label rings with the EU/ISO size instead, which is the inner circumference in millimetres. A ringmaat 17 ring has a circumference of about 53 mm, so the same ring can be called “17” in one shop and “53” in another.
Diameter or circumference? How to tell which size you are looking at
The two ranges never overlap, which makes them easy to tell apart. Adult diameter sizes fall roughly between 14 and 23. Circumference sizes fall roughly between 44 and 70. A “17” is always a diameter and a “54” is always a circumference.
To convert between them, multiply the diameter by 3.14 to get the circumference, or divide the circumference by 3.14 to get the diameter. For example, 17 × 3.14 ≈ 53.4 mm.

Typical Dutch ring sizes
Dutch jewellers commonly quote an average of about ringmaat 17 for women and about 20½ for men. Ringmaat 17 is close to US 6½ (UK M½), and ringmaat 20½ is close to US 10½ (UK U½). Individual sizes vary widely, so treat averages as a starting point only.
Measuring your Dutch ring size at home
- From a ring that fits: measure straight across the inside with a ruler or calliper. That number, rounded to the nearest quarter, is your ringmaat.
- From your finger: wrap a thin strip of paper or non-stretchy string around the base of the finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length. Divide by 3.14 to get the diameter.

Measure at the end of the day when your fingers are warm. For wide bands of 6 mm or more, go up a quarter to half a size.
